Learn Twice sponsored by John Deere John Deere / SAE International
AWIM® Learn Twice Initiative

Thank you for your interest in the John Deere Learn Twice Initiative. This initiative will partner Collegiate Design Series (CDS) teams with classroom teachers using a challenge from SAE International's A World In Motion® (AWIM) www.awim.org program. Since many of the teachers and CDS teams might not be familiar with the AWIM program we expect that there will be a need for training sessions to introduce those involved with implementing the program in the classroom.

Teams that have inquired about the opportunity are advised to make contact with schools and share information about the AWIM program with any interested teachers. The contact from the CDS team will need to supply the contact information of the teacher (name, email and school) participating to kfrancis@sae.org. Once that information has been received the teacher will be contacted to determine which challenge they will be using and how many kits they will need and given directions for ordering the materials; the kits will be supplied free to the teachers.

Due to the range of locations of the participants most training will be conducted as WebEx training. Past experience has shown that CDS teams should have an opportunity to build the vehicle involved in the challenge their participating teacher has chosen so materials to build that vehicle will be sent to the team contact before the WebEx is scheduled; materials should arrive early enough so that when a WebEx training is scheduled the teachers and volunteers will have an opportunity to manipulate them and ask any clarifying questions. The WebEx opportunity would also be a good time to discuss future visits from the volunteers. AWIM has a number of materials that have been developed to support volunteers in the classroom and these will be presented in the WebEx training with instructions for accessing them.

The requirements for reimbursement of the team registration will be 30 combined hours of volunteering in the classroom, that is, if a team of six volunteers assist in the classroom for one hour then we would hope they could visit on five different occasions, or any other combination. As a CDS team please keep the information about who participated, when the visits occurred, and the time spent assisting in the classroom for submission to kfrancis@sae.org. After the classroom involvement component has been completed the teacher will sign off acknowledging the volunteers participation. There will also be a requirement to place a decal with the John Deere Learn Twice logo on the team vehicle, and teachers and volunteers will complete participation surveys. The team contact then submits an email to kfrancis@sae.org requesting reimbursement for the event stating to whom and where to send the reimbursement check and a check will be issued from SAE within two weeks.
