Students Visit SAE Event

Streamwood High School Presentation at SAE International Commercial Vehicle Event
Rosemont, Illinois

On October 2nd four high school students from Streamwood High School and four of their physical science teachers attended the SAE Commercial Vehicle Event and made a presentation on the exhibition hall floor. The presentation included on both the SAE Electric Car Challenge and the SAE Fuel Cell Car Challenge.

The presentation was a culminating event that capped off nearly three weeks of effort put forth by students and teachers, in the classroom, to build, design and test electric prototype models of toy cars. These vehicles become artifacts of an engineering and inquiry-based approach to learning science at the high school level.

Students participating in the presentation are a small sample of over 200 students at Streamwood High School that utilize the SAE Electric Car Challenge as a resource to learn fundamental concepts of motion, scientific inquiry and cooperative team effort to solve problems.

At the convention, engineers from all over the world stopped by the Streamwood booth and engaged our student in discussion regarding their prototype car models.

The models on display featured battery powered, fuel cell powered and photovoltaic powered vehicles. During these discussions, the students detailed for the engineers their efforts in construction and testing the cars. The results of their scientific investigations were displayed as a PowerPoint presentation and also organized on a science tri-fold display board.
